Ribbon wound steel banding has each layer of steel wound directly over the one below. This makes the width of the strapping the same as the width of the coil.

Mill wound steel banding is a larger coil than ribbon wound. The strapping is oscillated uniformly and tightly across the 70mm  width of the core.
